After two years of severe dental pain, 51-year-old Robert Probert, a severely disabled and non-verbal man, has finally received the urgent dental treatment he desperately needed, following intervention from Member of the Senedd Samuel Kurtz MS.
Robert relies entirely on his 80-year-old mother for daily care. His family reported that he had been unable to eat properly and experienced rapid weight loss, leaving him “wasting away in agony,” according to his brother, Alfie Probert. Alfie also highlighted the strain on their mother, who is unwell and caring for Robert around the clock.
The intervention from Mr. Kurtz followed widespread local concern and a social media post that was widely shared in Pembrokeshire. His office had been in contact with the family and he personally raised Robert’s case on the floor of the Senedd, pressing the Welsh Government for urgent attention. He also submitted written concerns to the Welsh Government and Hywel Dda University Health Board.
Robert has now attended the Day Surgery Unit at Bridgend Hospital and is recovering safely.
“This is a welcome and much-needed outcome,” said Samuel Kurtz MS. “While we are relieved that Robert now has the care he urgently needed, this case highlights the challenges vulnerable adults face in accessing essential healthcare, particularly in rural areas like Pembrokeshire. No one should be left in pain for years.”
Mr. Kurtz praised the hospital staff for their dedication and reiterated the urgent need for more accessible dental services for people with learning difficulties and complex needs.
“This is one of many cases my office works on behind the scenes. It shows the difference persistent advocacy can make in safeguarding residents and supporting their wellbeing,” he added.
