Local business owners across West Wales are being invited to an online briefing on Monday 26th January at 10:30 am to understand the impact of forthcoming Business Rates changes, as concerns grow about sharp increases in rateable values for retail, hospitality and tourism businesses.

Paul Davies MS and Samuel Kurtz MS will host the online event alongside guest speakers including the Valuation Office Agency to explain what the Business Rates changes mean in practice and how businesses can prepare ahead of the new rateable values coming into force in April 2026.

Many businesses across the region have already seen their rateable values rise significantly, placing additional pressure on high streets, local jobs and future investment. Business owners in sectors such as hospitality and tourism have warned that these increases are unsustainable and risk undermining economic recovery and growth.

The event is aimed at business owners, employers and managers who want clear, practical information about the changes, how they may affect their business, and how to plan ahead. It will also provide an opportunity for businesses to share their experiences and concerns directly with elected representatives.

Speaking ahead of the event, Samuel Kurtz MS said:

“Too many local businesses are facing sharp increases in their rateable values, at a time when costs are already rising. This session is about making sure business owners understand what is coming, what options are available to them, and how we can make the strongest possible case for a fairer system.”

Paul Davies MS added:

“Hospitality and tourism businesses are the backbone of our local economy, particularly in West Wales. We want to hear directly from businesses about the challenges they face and ensure their voices are heard as decisions are made about Business Rates in Wales.”
The online briefing will cover:

•    An overview of the Business Rates system in Wales
•    What the new rateable value changes mean for local businesses
•    How businesses can have their say and help shape the case for fairer Business Rates
