Registering To Vote
You need to be on the electoral register to vote in UK elections and, referendums you are not automatically registered even if you pay council tax.
You can register to vote if you are: 16 or over (but you cannot vote until you are 18), a British, Irish Republic or Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of a European Union country living in the UK. To register to vote, you need to complete the household electoral registration form that gets sent to every property in the County around August/September each year. You can also register at any time throughout the year as the register is updated every month, so if you move house and need to register at your new address you won't lose out on your chance to vote.
Remember!
- It is a legal requirement to register to vote, but not to vote.
- If you apply for credit, credit reference agencies can use the register to check your details and if you are not registered you may be refused credit.
- By registering to vote it gives you a say on the important issues that affect you, who runs the country, sits and the local council and who represents you in Europe.
- Elections can be called a short notice, if you are not on the electoral role you can not vote.

Postal Votes
If you will be away on polling day, at work or on holiday, are physically unable or just don't have the time to get to a polling station to vote in person, you can still exercise your democratic right to vote. You may have moved house since the electoral register was drawn up and have not yet joined the register at your new address.
You can choose either to vote by post or to appoint someone else - a proxy - to vote on your behalf.

VOTING BY PROXY
Voting by proxy means that you can get some who you trust to vote on your behalf. This is useful if you are unable to get to the polling station on Election Day be it because you are ill and are unable to get to a polling station or if you are abroad on Election Day.
Anyone can be your proxy as long as they are eligible to vote in that type of election and they are willing to vote on your behalf. You cannot be a proxy for more than two people at any one election, unless they are a close relative.
The deadline for applying to vote by proxy is normally 6 working days before an election. However, if you have a medical emergency 6 days before Election Day or after, you can apply to vote by emergency proxy if the emergency means that you cannot go to the polling station in person.
