Preseli Pembrokeshire Constituency

There are currently 650 constituencies represented in the House of Commons of which Preseli Pembrokeshire is one. The average constituency size is approximately 74000 registered voters, each constituency being represented by a single Member of Parliament (MP). Stephen Crabb is the local Member of Parliament and a Conservative.

Preseli Pembrokeshire is also a constituency of the National Assembly for Wales. It elects one Assembly Member (AM) by the first past the post method of election. Paul Davies is the local Assembly Member and a Conservative. Preseli Pembrokeshire is also one of eight constituencies in the Mid and West Wales electoral region, which elects four additional members, in addition to eight constituency members. This method was designed to produce a degree of proportional representation for the region as a whole.

To keep the electorate of each constituency as close to the national average as reasonably as possible, constituency boundaries are subject to regular review by the four independent Boundary Commissions. These will, effect each constituency usually every 10 to 15 years.

The Preseli Pembrokeshire constituency was created in 1997, and the Preseli Pembrokeshire Welsh Assembly constituency followed the same boundaries in 1999.

The constituency is the most westerly constituency in Wales, its boundaries comprising of the north and west coasts of Pembrokeshire, taking in just about two thirds of the county above the Haven. The electorate is 55000. Much of the coastal area is in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

The constituency is predominately English speaking with a Welsh language area in the north of the county above the Landsker Line (the line of medieval castles built to separate the Celts and the Normans).

The main industries in the area are tourism and farming, and the main employers in the constituency are Pembrokeshire County Council and the Derwen NHS Trust.
